Screen Size:
Original Model: 3.53 inch diagonal top screen, 3.03 inch bottom
XL Model: 4.88 inch diagonal top screen, 4.18 inch bottom
Analysis: These differences in the diagonal measurement of the screen may not seem very big, but they equate to the XL Model having about 90% larger screens.
Winner: XL Model

Screen Resolution
Original Model: 800×240 top screen, 320×240 bottom
XL Model: 800×240 top screen, 320×240 bottom
Analysis: The fact that the XL has the same screen resolution despite having substantially larger screens means that the graphics may appear stretched and pixelated.
Winner: Original Model

Memory:
Original Model: 2GB SD Card Included
XL Model: 4GB SD Card Included
Analysis: The XL version comes with double the memory, which will come in handy if you plan on purchasing downloadable games.
Winner: XL Model

Price:
Original Model: $170 – Click to Check Current Prices
XL Model: $200 – Click for Current Prices
Analysis: Only a $30 difference in price, but that’s about the price of a game.
Winner: Original Model

Conclusion:
These two models have their strengths and weaknesses, and it really comes down to personal preference. If you already own the original 3DS, there’s no sense upgrading to the XL Model, but the larger screens really do make for a more enjoyable gaming experience.
Winner: 3DS XL (by a tiny margin)

I ended up buying the XL by trading in my 3DS. The difference in eye strain helped me out considerably, especially in the 3D functionality. The smaller screen of the 3DS would sometimes shift slightly, throwing off the 3D, but the larger screen of the XL is more forgiving.

3dsxl, because you better go big or go home. that and as we get older our eyesight goes too. AND Pokemon x and y comes out this year!!!

  3. I got the smaller since it’s a bit more portable. I guess that’s the main reason.
